Obit: Mickey Rooney

Another Hollywood legend has passed on. Actor Mickey Rooney is dead at 93.

As a child star, Rooney portrayed the character Andy Hardy in some 20 movies. He went on to co-star with Judy Garland in a number of musicals.

Rooney also worked on the small screen. He starred in several short-lived sitcoms, including The Mickey Rooney Show (1954) and Mickey (1964). He guested on such TV classics as The Fugitive, Naked City, Rawhide, Twilight Zone and Wagon Train. He later provided the voice of Santa in the Rankin-Bass animated classic The Year Without a Santa Claus.

Rooney also made frequent appearances at the altar. He married 8 times, including his first marriage to future film star Ava Gardner.

All told, Rooney worked in films and television from the 1920s to the 2010s. He passed away Sunday in California.

New Broadcast TV Diginets On The Way

Broadcasting & Cable is reporting one of the founders of African-American diginet BounceTV is looking to launch two new digital broadcast networks this summer.

According to B&C, Jonathan Katz has started his own company (Katz Broadcasting) that will debut the female-targeted Escape and the male-focused Grit later this year. Both networks plan to air theatrical movies and off-network programs (hopefully including some classic TV in the mix 🙂 )

Katz reportedly has a deal in place with Spanish broadcaster Univision. This would give the new networks carriage in such major markets as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas.
