Classic TV Westerns Viewing Guide

Westerns were all over the primetime network schedules in the 1950s and 60s. By the time the 1970s rolled around, viewer tastes were changing and the western era was all but over.

Long-running westerns Bonanza and Gunsmoke ended in the 1970s. Although there were a handful of westerns that launched later in the decade, none could match the genre’s earlier success.

Fortunately, many local stations continued to air off-network reruns of classic westerns long after they left primetime. These local stations, along with family-oriented cable networks like CBN (now ABC Family), helped expose these great shows to new generations of viewers.

Today there are many places to catch your favorite western shows, whether its on pay channels like Encore Westerns or for free on national diginets like Cozi and MeTV. There are also many westerns available for purchase on DVD.

The table below shows where classic westerns (1950s-70s) are currently available for viewing (as of February 2014). The columns include Program Title (with a link to DVD releases), Diginets (national programming services carried by local TV stations), Cable/Satellite Networks and Streaming (Internet-based services like Hulu, Netflix).

Saddle up and enjoy! Please contact me via Facebook or Twitter with your comments and suggestions.

Three’s Company Coming To Antenna

Antenna-TV-logo
Tribune’s classic TV diginet Antenna TV will be adding Three’s Company and Too Close for Comfort to their lineup beginning April 7.

Ted Knight starred in the 1980s sitcom Too Close for Comfort, which will air weekdays from 9-10AM and 1-2AM Eastern. The long-running sitcom Three’s Company starred John Ritter, Suzanne Somers and Joyce DeWitt. It will air weekdays from 10-11AM and 12-1AM Eastern. Three’s Company will also air Saturday evenings and Sunday late nights.

The sitcoms will replace the 9-11AM movie currently airing on Antenna TV. To find an affiliate near you, visit AntennaTV.tv.

1960s Sitcoms Viewing Guide

Our crack research team (consisting of me, myself and I) decided to take a look at where YOU could take a look at classic sitcoms from the 1960s.

I researched the primetime schedules from the 60s and put together a list of shows that have aired in syndication and/or on DVD. Note that I included some cartoons and the campy Adam West Batman series in this sitcom guide.

The table below shows where these shows are currently available for viewing (as of February 2014). The columns include Program Title (with a link to DVD releases), Diginets (national programming services carried by local TV stations), Cable/Satellite Networks and Streaming (Internet-based services like Hulu, Netflix).

Please note some shows may also air on broadcast stations, i.e. WFMY Greensboro NC still runs The Andy Griffith Show on weekday afternoons. These local airings are not included in this viewing guide…please check your local listings.

I hope you find this guide useful. Please contact me via Facebook with any errors or omissions.

Classic TV Affiliate Guide

If you love classic TV and are thinking about cutting the cord (dumping cable/satellite), here is something for you.

I’ve put together a directory of where you can find classic TV programming services on your local over-the-air broadcast stations. Those services include Antenna TV, Cozi TV, MeTV, Retro tv and This TV.

The list includes station call letters and digital channel numbers for the top 50 media markets in the USA. Check it out!

Antenna TV: TV How It Was Meant To Be

Antenna-TV-logo

In an earlier post, I raved about MeTV, a national classic TV programming service. Weigel Broadcasting launched MeTV in Chicago in 2005, taking it national in 2010. It’s now carried on local television stations across America, mostly on digital subchannels.

Less than 3 weeks after MeTV’s national launch, a competing service was born: Antenna TV. It too has Chicago roots, owned by Tribune Broadcasting.

Unfortunately, there are currently no Antenna TV affiliates where I live (Johnstown-Altoona-State College DMA). I’m keeping my fingers crossed someone will pick it up eventually…are you listening WTAJ?

Even though I haven’t been able to sample Antenna TV personally, I have followed their programming schedules online. Here’s a list of the classic TV shows they carry as of January 2014:

Comedies
All In The Family, Bachelor Father, Barney Miller, Bewitched, Burns and Allen, Dennis the Menace, Diff’rent Strokes, Father Knows Best, The Flying Nun, Gidget, Good Times, Green Acres, Hazel, I Dream of Jeannie, The Jack Benny Program, Maude, McHale’s Navy, Mister Ed, The Monkees, The Partridge Family, The Patty Duke Show, Sanford and Son, The Three Stooges and WKRP in Cincinnati.

Adventure and Drama Series
Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Circus Boy, Flipper, Here Come The Brides, It Takes A Thief, Suspense Theatre

Antenna TV is available on broadcast subchannels nationwide, including WPIX New York, KTLA Los Angeles, WGN Chicago and WPHL Philadelphia. For a complete list of affiliates and programming schedules, please visit Antenna TV’s website.
