Classic TV Westerns Viewing Guide

Westerns were all over the primetime network schedules in the 1950s and 60s. By the time the 1970s rolled around, viewer tastes were changing and the western era was all but over.

Long-running westerns Bonanza and Gunsmoke ended in the 1970s. Although there were a handful of westerns that launched later in the decade, none could match the genre’s earlier success.

Fortunately, many local stations continued to air off-network reruns of classic westerns long after they left primetime. These local stations, along with family-oriented cable networks like CBN (now ABC Family), helped expose these great shows to new generations of viewers.

Today there are many places to catch your favorite western shows, whether its on pay channels like Encore Westerns or for free on national diginets like Cozi and MeTV. There are also many westerns available for purchase on DVD.

The table below shows where classic westerns (1950s-70s) are currently available for viewing (as of February 2014). The columns include Program Title (with a link to DVD releases), Diginets (national programming services carried by local TV stations), Cable/Satellite Networks and Streaming (Internet-based services like Hulu, Netflix).

Saddle up and enjoy! Please contact me via Facebook or Twitter with your comments and suggestions.

Cozi Adds Avengers, Make Room for Daddy

Cozi-TV-Logo

National classic TV diginet Cozi TV is changing up their weekday afternoon lineup.

Starting Monday February 24, the 1960s British espionage series The Avengers takes over the 1PM time slot. It will be followed at 2PM by Magnum P.I., which will continue to air in primetime Thursdays from 8PM-Midnight.

Cozi’s rotating Mystery Wheel (Banacek, McCloud, McMillan & Wife and The Name of the Game) will air from 3-4:30PM, followed by a new entry: the Danny Thomas sitcom Make Room for Daddy. It looks like the only show leaving the schedule is The Bold Ones.

Coming to Cozi this summer: Hart to Hart, Knight Rider and Starsky & Hutch. Stay tuned for details!

Find out more about the new Cozi lineup by visiting their website.

1960s Sitcoms Viewing Guide

Our crack research team (consisting of me, myself and I) decided to take a look at where YOU could take a look at classic sitcoms from the 1960s.

I researched the primetime schedules from the 60s and put together a list of shows that have aired in syndication and/or on DVD. Note that I included some cartoons and the campy Adam West Batman series in this sitcom guide.

The table below shows where these shows are currently available for viewing (as of February 2014). The columns include Program Title (with a link to DVD releases), Diginets (national programming services carried by local TV stations), Cable/Satellite Networks and Streaming (Internet-based services like Hulu, Netflix).

Please note some shows may also air on broadcast stations, i.e. WFMY Greensboro NC still runs The Andy Griffith Show on weekday afternoons. These local airings are not included in this viewing guide…please check your local listings.

I hope you find this guide useful. Please contact me via Facebook with any errors or omissions.

Classic TV Affiliate Guide

If you love classic TV and are thinking about cutting the cord (dumping cable/satellite), here is something for you.

I’ve put together a directory of where you can find classic TV programming services on your local over-the-air broadcast stations. Those services include Antenna TV, Cozi TV, MeTV, Retro tv and This TV.

The list includes station call letters and digital channel numbers for the top 50 media markets in the USA. Check it out!

Cozi TV: The Easiest Decision You’ll Make All Day

Cozi-TV-Logo
I’ve written earlier articles on Antenna TV and MeTV. Today I will profile another national classic TV programming service: Cozi TV.

Cozi is owned by NBCUniversal and launched as a digital subchannel on NBC owned-and-operated stations in December 2012. It replaced a local news/lifestyle format called NBC Nonstop.

Cozi now airs on approximately 40 affiliates across the country. It runs a mix of classic TV, movies and original lifestyle programming.

Some affiliates pre-empt network programming for local news, including WNBC New York which airs an hour of news from 7-8PM weeknights.

Here’s a look at the classic TV shows currently airing on Cozi TV:

Adventure/Crime Drama
The Adventures of Robin Hood, Banacek, The Bold Ones, Charlie’s Angels, I Spy, Magnum P.I. (1980s show), McCloud, McMillan & Wife, The Name of The Game, Run For Your Life, Sherlock Holmes

Comedies
The Real McCoys

Dramas
Fantasy Island, Highway To Heaven (1980s show), Lassie, Marcus Welby M.D.

Science Fiction
The Bionic Woman, One Step Beyond, The Six Million Dollar Man

Westerns
Alias Smith and Jones, The Deputy, Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger, Maverick, The Roy Rogers Show, The Virginian

Although they don’t air a 24/7 schedule of classic TV (and movies) like MeTV and Antenna TV, Cozi offers a nice selection of vintage shows, especially dramas and westerns. For more programming info and to find an affiliate near you, visit the Cozi website.
