me-tv-logo
National classic TV digital network MeTV will be launching in the nation’s 38th largest market next month.

Beginning Monday April 21, MeTV will air on West Palm Beach, Florida NBC affiliate WPTV subchannel 5.2. The station currently air lifestyle-themed Live Well Network on that frequency, most likely that programming will move to channel 5.3

Chicago-based Me-TV currently has 160 affiliates and reaches an estimated 91% of the United States population.

Classic TV Westerns Viewing Guide

Westerns were all over the primetime network schedules in the 1950s and 60s. By the time the 1970s rolled around, viewer tastes were changing and the western era was all but over.

Long-running westerns Bonanza and Gunsmoke ended in the 1970s. Although there were a handful of westerns that launched later in the decade, none could match the genre’s earlier success.

Fortunately, many local stations continued to air off-network reruns of classic westerns long after they left primetime. These local stations, along with family-oriented cable networks like CBN (now ABC Family), helped expose these great shows to new generations of viewers.

Today there are many places to catch your favorite western shows, whether its on pay channels like Encore Westerns or for free on national diginets like Cozi and MeTV. There are also many westerns available for purchase on DVD.

The table below shows where classic westerns (1950s-70s) are currently available for viewing (as of February 2014). The columns include Program Title (with a link to DVD releases), Diginets (national programming services carried by local TV stations), Cable/Satellite Networks and Streaming (Internet-based services like Hulu, Netflix).

1960s Sitcoms Viewing Guide

Our crack research team (consisting of me, myself and I) decided to take a look at where YOU could take a look at classic sitcoms from the 1960s.

I researched the primetime schedules from the 60s and put together a list of shows that have aired in syndication and/or on DVD. Note that I included some cartoons and the campy Adam West Batman series in this sitcom guide.

The table below shows where these shows are currently available for viewing (as of February 2014). The columns include Program Title (with a link to DVD releases), Diginets (national programming services carried by local TV stations), Cable/Satellite Networks and Streaming (Internet-based services like Hulu, Netflix).

Please note some shows may also air on broadcast stations, i.e. WFMY Greensboro NC still runs The Andy Griffith Show on weekday afternoons. These local airings are not included in this viewing guide…please check your local listings.

I hope you find this guide useful. Please contact me via Facebook with any errors or omissions.

MeTVNetwork.com: Streaming Fun

me-tv-logo

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you already know how much I love MeTV’s classic TV service, available on local broadcast stations coast-to-coast. They serve up a great lineup of classic TV shows from the 1950s to the 1980s, complete with full show credits and fun promos to boot.

Turns out MeTV also has some real gems available for streaming on their website. In addition to public domain cartoons, they’re also offering select episodes of programs from their vast library. Some of the shows are currently airing on MeTV, some have aired in the past.

Keep in mind MeTV rotates their online selection, adding and removing episodes often, so it’s a good idea to check back weekly to see what’s available. Here are the shows available for streaming as of 2/4/14:

  • Celebrity Bowling (online only)
  • The Dick Van Dyke Show (airs Friday nights on MeTV)
  • The Doris Day Show (online only)
  • H.R. Pufnstuf (airs Saturday mornings on MeTV)
  • The Invisible Man (online only)
  • The Land of the Lost (airs Saturday mornings on MeTV)
  • The Loretta Young Show (online only)
  • The Lucy Show (online only)
  • The Mothers-In-Law (online only)
  • Peter Gunn (airs Sunday late nights on MeTV)
  • The Rifleman (airs Mon-Sat on MeTV)
  • The Saint (airs Sunday late nights on MeTV)
  • Wanted: Dead or Alive (airs Mon-Sat on MeTV)

I was just watching an episode of Celebrity Bowling…what a hoot! This half-hour syndicated show originally aired from 1971-78 and featured quite an eclectic mix of celebrities. The show I watched had legendary cowboy Roy Rogers and longtime Variety columnist Army Archerd teamed up against Richard Dawson and Lyle Waggoner. Great 70s hair styles and outfits! Roy, Army and Lyle all wore red while “Dick” Dawson sported a stylish blue turtleneck, complete with sideburns and bling. Gotta love it!

MeTV Upgrades in NYC and Philly

me-tv-logo

Chicago-based classic TV programming service MeTV will be changing affiliates in two of the nation’s top four media markets, moving from secondary to primary channel positions.

This change to primary channels means that the new affiliates will be considered “must carry” stations, so cable and satellite companies will be obligated to carry them. Secondary digital channels are not “must carry”, so their viewers often have to rely on an over-the-air antenna to receive those channels.

MeTV’s current New York City affiliate is WWME-TV 43.1, a station licensed to Bridgeport, CT. They actually pre-empt a lot of overnight and early morning MeTV programming.

The new Big Apple affiliate will be KVNV, which airs on digital channel 3. Interesting story here is that KVNV’s license was “moved” from Ely, NV to Middletown Township, NJ. The MeTV affiliation change is scheduled for this spring.

In Philadelphia, MeTV will move from WFMZ 69.3 to KJWP 2. The same company that owns KVNV owns KJWP, which also “moved” from Jackson, WY to Wilmington, DE. The Philly MeTV switch will take place March 1

I know that a lot of this technical stuff is confusing, but this sounds like good news. The bottom line is classic TV fans in New York and Philadelphia will have improved access to MeTV on cable and satellite.

We will update our Classic TV Affiliate Guide when the changes have taken place.

Classic TV Affiliate Guide

If you love classic TV and are thinking about cutting the cord (dumping cable/satellite), here is something for you.

I’ve put together a directory of where you can find classic TV programming services on your local over-the-air broadcast stations. Those services include Antenna TV, Cozi TV, MeTV, Retro tv and This TV.

The list includes station call letters and digital channel numbers for the top 50 media markets in the USA. Check it out!

MeTV: Memorable Entertainment Television

me-tv-logo

Remember back in the ’80s when MTV actually played music videos? Their slogan was “I Want My MTV.” Nowadays, I Want My MeTV!

In case you’ve never heard of it, MeTV is a national classic television service offered to local TV stations across the United States. Most stations program it on one of their digital subchannels, meaning that chances are good you can pick it up for free 🙂

Where I live, in West Central Pennsylvania, MeTV is carried by the local NBC affiliate WJAC on virtual Channel 6.2. I pick it up over-the-air using a Mohu Leaf flat antenna, made right here in the USA!

MeTV carries a 24/7 schedule (excluding mandatory 3-hour E/I educational blocks on weekend mornings) of classic TV shows from the 1950s to the 1990s, mostly 60s and 70s era programs.

Best part is they run the full credits at the beginning and end of all shows, plus the picture quality is very crisp. No modern garbage or infomercials, just 100% classic TV. Certain affiliates may pre-empt some programming, but fortunately WJAC runs MeTV’s full national schedule.

As of January 2014, here is a listing of the classic TV shows currently airing on MeTV:

  • 12 O’Clock High
  • Adam-12
